4 style choices to reduce your environmental impact.

4 style choices to reduce your environmental impact.

Your guide to upping your style and reducing your impact.

When talking about fashion in 2022, it’s hard not to also talk about climate change. With the tragic floods in NSW and QLD, right now it’s even more front of mind.

The fashion industry is responsible for 8-10% of global greenhouse gas emissions and is at risk of producing twice the volume of emissions required to meet with Paris Agreement global warming targets by 2030 if it doesn’t rapidly change its ways.

Sustainable fashion can play a big part in that solution.

You’ve heard us (many times!) talking about the importance of investing in your wardrobe. And when you choose to shop or wear sustainable fashion, you’re also helping to invest in the planet - the theme of this year’s Earth Day.

So instead of feeling powerless or overwhelmed, we’ve rounded up the 4 style choices or things you can do to invest in our planet and make your impact in the right way.

1. Educate yourself about sustainable clothing. Ignorance is not bliss; awareness is the best accessory. With so many incredible innovators and sustainable designers and advocates around, it’s your style responsibility to consider who, what and where you shop. At After Eight, we do all the hard work for you so you can confidently shop knowing that the research, quality and sustainably checks have been done to bring you the best of the most stylish and ethical fashion.

2. Shop for quality over quantity. No, you don’t need a new outfit for every occasion. Shop better and dress better by choosing better. That also means opting for natural materials - think organic cotton, linen or hemp - or 100% recycled materials.

3. Buy second-hand clothing. Save textiles from landfill and love what’s already been made. Pre-Loved by After Eight is our newest offering to take your sustainable style further by offering the best of second-hand designer and top quality fashion to shop or sell. See for yourself here. You can also hold clothes swaps with your friends or local community.

4. Learn how to repair your clothes. The best way to keep your favourite pieces in your wardrobe for longer. A patch or alteration here and there can work wonders. The longer clothes are kept and worn, the lower their emissions footprint.

Love your sustainable fashion with the outfit to prove it? Post a picture of yourself wearing your go-to sustainable garment, tell us why you like it and tag @its_aftereight and #itsaftereightgirl. We can’t wait to see!
