Yesterday, the 25th of March at 8:30pm, marked Earth Hour. Earth Hour calls for Australians to switch off and take #TimeOutForNature.

In line with yesterday’s Earth Hour, this fortnight we have looked into the latest fashion news and what actions businesses, and individuals are taking to have less of an impact on the planet and to take #TimeOutForNature.

1. The Oscar’s Sustainable Fashion Guide

The recent 2023 Oscar’s awards marked the first awards ceremony to have a sustainable fashion guide for guests.

Put together by RCGD global, a women-led global change-making organisation, the guide is designed to show simple solutions of how anyone can make more sustainable choices.

Celebrities of Cate Blanchett, Olivia Wilde, Kendall Jenner, and Naomi Scott were seen on the red carpet in archived, lower-impact and sustainably sourced, and vintage designs.

2. Peta calls for transparency on H&M’s Down sourcing

As a shareholder of H&M, the Swedish animal rights organisation Peta is questioning the company’s claim of transparency and calling for a report on the slaughter methods used by their down suppliers. 

H&M currently provide no information on their farms and slaughterhouses that supply its products, debunking their misleading claims and Responsible Down Standard (RDS) label.

The H&M group welcomes Peta’s commitment to uncovering issues of this nature, “which ultimately helps to improve industry standards and practices in relation to animal welfare”.

3. The world’s first sustainable BioSequins material

Featured on the cover of Vogue’s April 2023 edition, worn by eco-activist Cara Delevingne, Stella McCartney has debuted an exclusive jumpsuit made using BioSequins.

The material was innovated from plant-based cellulose using no metals, minerals, or synthetic pigments or colorants, and is biodegradable and non-toxic.

The material was innovated in collaboration with colour and material solutions for the circular economy start-up Radiant Matter, bring Stella McCartney one step closer to her sustainability goals.
