4 expert-approved styling hacks to revitalise your wardrobe.

The only thing better than the thrill of bringing a beautiful new piece into your wardrobe? Investing in what you already own. ‘Make do and mend’ no longer has to mean compromise, but rather extending the life of pieces you love and making them even better.

With a mix of alterations and accessories, here are 4 hacks straight from a stylist’s toolkit to breathe new life into your wardrobe.

  • Push the buttons

  • The fastest way to freshen up a piece like a jacket is with a quick button change. A matching colour or even a contrasting colour instantly lifts it. Alternatively, shop around for some statement buttons to give added style power. It’s an easy DIY or take it to your local tailor (or skilled friend!).

  • Redesign.

  • And it doesn’t have to be scary! Turning that maxi dress you haven’t worn in years into a mini is a great way to fill your wardrobe with pieces that work for you. On the flipside, turning a dress with a great neckline but is too short into a top is another way to get a whole new item without buying a thing. Smaller alterations can also make a big difference; even removing a sleeve on a dress or adding a detail like a collar instantly gives it new life.

  • Add a belt.

  • A severely under-utilised accessory, a belt is a great way to instantly add shape, structure or even casualise an outfit, like a dress. A white linen dress with a contrast black leather belt completely changes the outfit. A great tip is to use the belt to cover any visible seams or joins on a dress or top and bottom combo - it’s an easy way to make it look more expensive.

  • Use a hair tie on the sleeves.

  • Pushing up the sleeves on a shirt or jacket creates a more relaxed, chic look. It’s a great way to casualise or modernise more formal tops. If yours keeps falling down, try the trick stylists swear by - putting a hair tie around the elbow to keep the sleeves up. Genius!
