As sustainability has grown a bigger part of the fashion conversation, the actual meaning of the word has ironically become even less clear.

So what do we mean when we say these items or this outfit is ‘sustainable’?

Given After Eight is all about shopping in considered fashion, it should come as no surprise that it’s a criteria we take very seriously. In fact, it’s a non-negotiable.

Every brand we stock has been carefully selected for their commitment and action towards the environmental and social impact of their clothing and production.

Before they’re brought on board, we ask every single brand to fill out our After Eight sustainability survey to understand and confirm we share the same sustainability values and goals. 

Questions cover things like whether their products are locally made, how they’re helping to reduce waste, how they ensure garments are fair trade and workers fairly paid, details on their considered approach to textile sourcing and production, and any ethical accreditations and certifications they hold. 

And that doesn’t stop once they’re stocked, either. Every season and collection, we continue to ask the tough questions so we can confidently share with you the valuable information about the pieces and brands you’re shopping for.

Because the fashion question we’re curious about is no longer just ‘Who are you wearing?’ but ‘Who actually made what you’re wearing’?

We do this because:
a) it’s the way we believe fashion retailers and designers should operate, and
